We learnt how to paint murals. We painted on walls and unhinged cupboard doors – anything that didn’t move! We even painted on a reclining colleague because we found him sprawled over the workbench pretending to be asleep. To prove he wasn’t we undid his shirt and painted his chest! Sorry John!

After 2 years of experimenting in different media (including body painting!) I sat my A level in Art. And failed! But I knew I couldn’t ignore this strong creative streak in me, and was determined to get onto an art school foundation course.

With my portfolio of drawings and paintings I managed to get into Bournemouth and Poole college of Art where we continued to experiment with different media such as etching, lithography, screen printing, clay…even wood and plastic, but, yet again – you guessed it – no watercolor!

After a year on this broadly based course I chose to study graphic design over fine art because (and this is common to so many “undiscovered” artists), I wanted to make a living once I graduated!

And graphic design will always offer more job opportunities than fine art!

Now at this point I don’t want you to think that I have an advantage over you if you haven’t been to art school. As I’ll show you later, it’s the techniques that are used in watercolor painting that help to separate the amateur from the professional.

Techniques that I wasn’t taught in four years at art school!

From time to time, alongside a successful career in advertising, I’ve dabbled (spelt s-t-r-u-g-g-l-e-d) with watercolors, but seldom did the paintings turn out how I wanted them to. I look back now at some paintings that I tackled over and over again but to this day know I hadn’t achieved what I set out to do.
